고린도전서 8장

1우상에게 바친 고기에 대하여 말하겠습니다. 우리는 우리 모두가 지식이 있는 줄로 알고 있습니다. 지식은 사람을 교만하게 하지만, 사랑은 덕을 세웁니다. 2자기가 무엇을 안다고 생각하는 사람은, 아직도 그가 마땅히 알아야 할 방식대로 알지 못하는 사람입니다. 3그러나 하나님을 사랑하는 사람은 하나님께서 그를 알아주십니다. - 메세지 성경을 읽으니 1,2절이 더 잘 이해가 된다. 그렇지만 이 또한 유진 피터슨의 해석이라는 걸 감안할 때, 메세지성경을 먼저 읽기보다 원문에 가까운 성경들을 먼저 읽어야겠다는 생각이 든다.  - 오늘날 '우상에게 바친 고기'는 내게 무엇일까? 제사자리일 수도 있고, 크리스챤 identity를 반대하는 문화 자체로도 볼 수 있는 것 같다.  - '하나님을 사랑하는 사람'이라고 스스로를 생각한 적도 있었는데, 왠지 요새는 이 말이 나와는 좀 멀어진 느낌이다 ㅠ 마지막으로 하나님께 사랑을 고백한 일이 언제던가. 요구만 하는 떼쟁이 같은 요즘이다.  4그런데 우상에게 바친 고기를 먹는 일을 두고 말하면, 우리가 알기로는, 세상에 우상이란 것은 아무것도 아니고, 오직 하나님 한 분 밖에는 신이 없습니다. 5이른바 신이라는 것들이 하늘에든 땅에든 있다고 칩시다. 그러면 많은 신과 많은 주가 있는 것 같습니다. 6그러나 우리에게는 아버지가 되시는 하나님 한 분이 계실 뿐입니다. 만물은 그분에게서 났고, 우리는 그분을 위하여 있습니다. 그리고 한 분 주님이신 예수 그리스도가 계십니다. 만물이 그분으로 말미암아 있고, 우리도 그분으로 말미암아 있습니다. 7그러나 누구에게나 다 지식이 있는 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 사람들은 지금까지 우상을 섬기던 관습에 젖어 있어서, 그들이 먹는 고기가 우상의 것인 줄로 여기면서 먹습니다. 그들의 양심이 약하므로 더럽혀지는 것입니다. 8그러나 “우리를 하나님 앞에 내세우는 것은 음식이 아닙니다.” 음식을 먹지 않는다고 해서 손해볼 것도 없고, 먹는다고 해서 이로울 것도 없습니다. 9그러나 여러분에게 있는 이 자유가 약한 사람들에게 걸림돌이 되지 않도록 조심하십시오. 10지식이 있는 당신이 우상의 신당에 앉아서 먹고 있는 것을 어떤 사람이 보면, 그가 약한 사람일지라도, 그 양심에 용기가 생겨서, 우상에게 바친 고기를 먹게 되지 않겠습니까? 11그러면 그 약한 사람은 당신의 지식 때문에 망하는 것입니다. 그리스도께서는 그 약한 신도를 위하여 죽으셨습니다. 12이렇게 여러분이 형제자매들에게 죄를 짓고, 그들의 약한 양심을 상하게 하는 것은 그리스도께 죄를 짓는 것입니다. 13그러므로 음식이 내 형제를 걸어서 넘어지게 하는 것이라면, 그가 걸려서 넘어지지 않게 하기 위해서, 나는 평생 고기를 먹지 않겠습니다.

1 Now concerning food sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge [a]makes one conceited, but love edifies people. 2 If anyone thinks that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know; 3 but if anyone loves God, he is known by Him. 4 Therefore, concerning the eating of food sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is [b]nothing at all in the world, and that there is no God but one. 5 For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, 6 yet for us there is only one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him. - 같은 말이지만, 영어로는 더 생생하게 다가온다. 하나님을 위해 존재하는 나, 그리고 예수님을 통해 존재하는 나. 이러한 존재에 대한 분명한 설명을 왜 매일의 삶에서는 느끼면서 살고 있지 못하는 걸까.  - 성경이 단언적으로 내 영혼에 선포하는 짧은 구절들이 영혼을 통통 치고 지나간다. 남은 오늘 동안 만이라도, 내가 누구이며 내가 어떻게 존재하는지, 무엇을 위해 살아야 하는지를 느끼며 살고 싶다.  7 However, not all people have this knowledge; but some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 Now food will not bring us [c]close to God; we are neither [d]the worse if we do not eat, nor [e]the better if we do eat. 9 But take care that this [f]freedom of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if someone sees you, the one who has knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, will his conscience, if he is weak, not be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols? 11 For through your knowledge the one who is weak is ruined, the brother or sister for whose sake Christ died. 12 And so, by sinning against the brothers and sisters and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to sin.

 

Freedom with Responsibility (MSG)

8. 1-3 The question keeps coming up regarding meat that has been offered up to an idol: Should you attend meals where such meat is served, or not? We sometimes tend to think we know all we need to know to answer these kinds of questions—but sometimes our humble hearts can help us more than our proud minds. We never really know enough until we recognize that God alone knows it all.

4-6 Some people say, quite rightly, that idols have no actual existence, that there’s nothing to them, that there is no God other than our one God, that no matter how many of these so-called gods are named and worshiped they still don’t add up to anything but a tall story. They say—again, quite rightly—that there is only one God the Father, that everything comes from him, and that he wants us to live for him. Also, they say that there is only one Master—Jesus the Messiah—and that everything is for his sake, including us. Yes. It’s true.

7 In strict logic, then, nothing happened to the meat when it was offered up to an idol. It’s just like any other meat. I know that, and you know that. But knowing isn’t everything. If it becomes everything, some people end up as know-it-alls who treat others as know-nothings. Real knowledge isn’t that insensitive.

We need to be sensitive to the fact that we’re not all at the same level of understanding in this. Some of you have spent your entire lives eating “idol meat,” and are sure that there’s something bad in the meat that then becomes something bad inside of you. An imagination and conscience shaped under those conditions isn’t going to change overnight.

8-9 But fortunately God doesn’t grade us on our diet. We’re neither commended when we clean our plate nor reprimanded when we just can’t stomach it. But God does care when you use your freedom carelessly in a way that leads a fellow believer still vulnerable to those old associations to be thrown off track.

10 For instance, say you flaunt your freedom by going to a banquet thrown in honor of idols, where the main course is meat sacrificed to idols. Isn’t there great danger if someone still struggling over this issue, someone who looks up to you as knowledgeable and mature, sees you go into that banquet? The danger is that he will become terribly confused—maybe even to the point of getting mixed up himself in what his conscience tells him is wrong.

11-13 Christ gave up his life for that person. Wouldn’t you at least be willing to give up going to dinner for him—because, as you say, it doesn’t really make any difference? But it does make a difference if you hurt your friend terribly, risking his eternal ruin! When you hurt your friend, you hurt Christ. A free meal here and there isn’t worth it at the cost of even one of these “weak ones.” So, never go to these idol-tainted meals if there’s any chance it will trip up one of your brothers 

결국 본질이 무엇이냐고 바울은 묻고 있다. 음식이냐, 제사냐, 혹은, 이웃 사랑과 그의 약한 믿음에 대한 돌봄이냐. 오늘 나의 삶이 같은 믿는 동료인 이모님에 대해 그를 더욱 사랑하는 것에 대해, 혹은 그의 약한 믿음에 대해 조금이라도 도움이 되었는가? 아니면 오히려 그에게 stumbling block 의 역할만 하였는가. 예수님이 목숨을 바쳐 살려낸 그 목숨을 가지고, 나는 어떻게 대하였는가. 

8장에서 말하는, 형제를 걸려 넘어지게하는 죄를 짓지 않기 위해서는 내가 행하는 것의 기준이 지식이 아니라 사랑이어야 한다고 바울은 말한다. 그것이 나의 양심에 거리끼지 않는 행동이라도, 그것의 결과로 다른 사람이 넘어질 수 있다면, 그것은 예수님께 죄를 짓는 것이 된다. 믿음대로 산다는 말로, 주변을 의식하지 않고 살기가 얼마나 쉬운가. 주변 사람들에 의해 영향을 받지 않되, 그리고 그들의 눈치를 보지는 않되, 동시에 그들에게 미칠 영향을 고려하며 사는 삶은 참으로 복잡하고 명쾌하지 않다. 소신대로 사는 것 보다, 주변에 미칠 영향을 고려하며 사는 삶이 더 복잡하고 에너지가 많이 쓰이기 때문이다.

글을 쓰다보면 내가 무엇을 안다고 착각하기 쉽고, 그것을 나만 안다고 생각하며 교만해지기 쉽다. 내가 매일 하는 일 역시 그럴 수 있다. 지식에 대해 하나님은, 사랑과 대비하여 말씀하신다. 왜일까? 교만함과 사랑은 그만큼 대척점에 있나보다. 남들에 비하여 내가 더 낫다는 마음은 남들을 섬기고 사랑하는 마음의 반대인가보다. 

지식을 가지고 있다고 생각한다면, 아직도 이러한 진리를 모르고 있다는 뜻이 된다. 그리고 이어서 바울이 말하는 참지식은, 하나님을 사랑할때, 하나님이 그를 알아주신다는 사실이다. 

내가 알고 있다고 생각하는 것에 대해 다시 생각해봐야겠다. 내가 가지고 있다고 생각하는 세상지식 역시 이를 통해 이웃을 사랑하는 목적을 이루지 못한다면 참지식이 아니다. 그것이 사랑으로 귀결되고, 사랑을 목적으로 하지 않는다면, 글을 쓰는 것은 그것이 논문이든 보고서든, 나를 자랑하는 일이 된다. 그것은 하나님께 아무런 의미가 없다. 오직 사랑으로 이웃을 섬기고 하나님을 사랑하는 것 만이, 하나님께 남는 기록이 된다.
